About Dr Emily Carter

I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 8 years experience working across NHS and voluntary sector services. I currently work in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) team in South London. Outside of work, I like going for walks with my family’s rescue dogs (a Dalmatian and a Greyhound) - I have always been a huge dog lover!  I also enjoy trying out new activities, like exercise classes or pottery painting, with friends.

My experience and interests

Through experience and my extensive clinical training, I have gained the skills to assess and work therapeutically with a range of difficulties including:

  • Anxiety and phobias

  • Low mood

  • OCD

  • Behaviours that challenge

  • Low self-esteem

  • Emotionally-based school avoidance

  • Adjusting to/living with a health condition

  • Overcoming difficult or traumatic life experiences

  • Difficulties associated with neurodevelopmental conditions, such as Autism and ADHD

The majority of my career has been in CAMHS services where I work with children, young people, families and their networks. I have many years experience within school Mental Health Support Teams where I supported early-intervention work for common mental health difficulties and provided consultation to teaching and pastoral staff. I have also spent signifiant time within paediatric health settings. I have a particular interest in working with trauma-informed approaches, and supporting individuals live alongside chronic health conditions, or difficult life experiences.

How I Like to Work

I understand that it can be daunting to take the step of reaching out for help, and to talk about difficult things going on with someone new. It’s really important to me to spend time with my clients to build a trusting relationship where it feels safe enough to talk. The foundations of my clinical practice are built on warmth, compassion, curiosity and a non-judgemental and non-blaming approach.

Particularly with children, I like to draw upon clients’ interests and strengths within the work to make it creative and engaging. I work collaboratively to build a shared understanding of the difficultly, and arrive at some key hopes or goals for the work together. I am also able to make relevant adaptations to therapeutic work to accommodate a client’s individual needs or neurodiversity.

The Therapy Approaches I Use

As a Clinical Psychologist, I am trained in a wide range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches. I can draw upon, and integrate these, depending on the needs and preferences of you/your child.

Approaches that I frequently used are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (including parent-led CBT for younger children), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), along with narrative and systemic therapies.

My Credentials and Registration

I completed my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Canterbury Christ Church University. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council UK (HCPC) and my registration number is PYL045174.

I also hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Children and Young People’s Psychological Wellbeing Practice from King’s College London. I have completed parts 1 and 2 of Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, an evidence-based trauma therapy.

I have worked across numerous NHS trusts including University College London Hospitals, Oxleas and Kent and Medway Social Care Partnership. I currently work for South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. I am also an author of published research in academic journals.
