About Dr Chris Scane

I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 10 years’ experience working in a variety of NHS services, supporting adults, young people and their families with a range of psychological difficulties.

My experience and interests

I have worked extensively within both Adult Mental Health and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, supporting adults and young people experiencing a range of psychological difficulties including:

  • Anxiety, including social anxiety, phobias and OCD

  • Depression, including Bipolar Disorder

  • Feeling numb, unreal or detached (dissociation)

  • Low self-confidence

  • Paranoia or fear of harm from others

  • PTSD, including Complex PTSD and attachment trauma

  • Self-harm and risky behaviour

  • Sleep difficulties, including insomnia and nightmares

  • Substance use difficulties, including excessive use of alcohol

  • Unusual experiences such as hearing, seeing or feeling things others cannot (psychosis)

  • Unwanted intrusive memories or flashbacks

I have a particular interest and specialist expertise in working with those affected by adverse and traumatic life events.

You may wish to see me if you are struggling with the ongoing impact of difficult life events, including unwanted memories or flashbacks, feeling on edge, or feeling lost or stuck in life.

How I like to work

I endeavour to create a safe, trusting and collaborative relationship with my clients. Rather than asking “what is wrong with you?”, I prefer to ask “what has happened to you?” in order to understand why you have sought therapy.

I will work with you to create a shared understanding of your difficulties, set meaningful goals and work towards long-lasting change.

The therapy approaches I use

I work flexibly and collaboratively with my clients and draw upon a range of evidence-based approaches.

Primarily, I utilise Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Mindfulness approaches.

Additionally, I integrate concepts and principles from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT) and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Systemic Approaches (understanding the impact of a person’s environment and the context in which difficulties arise).

Finally, I aim to take a holistic view of healing, recognising the importance of sleep, nutrition and exercise.

My credentials and registration

I completed my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Hull. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC); my registration number is PYL33570. I also have Chartered Status with the British Psychological Society (BPS).

I have worked in a number of NHS Trusts across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, London, Kent and Sussex. Most recently, I worked for Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust on a national clinical trial measuring the effectiveness of a new psychological therapy for people with PTSD and psychosis.

In addition to my clinical work, I provide teaching as a Guest Lecturer on the Clinical Psychology Programme at the Salmon’s Institute for Applied Psychology, Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU).
