About Dr Nicola Meynen

I am a clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience of working in the NHS in a variety of clinical settings.

For much of that time I have worked in primary care, offering evidence-based psychological therapy and therapist supervision for a wide range of emotional difficulties and common mental health issues.

My experience and interests

As well as being a clinical psychologist, I am also a BABCP accredited cognitive behaviour therapist and have specialist experience delivering Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) to treat depression, low mood, stress, adjustment to life events, bereavement, low self-confidence and the anxiety disorders including PTSD, OCD, social phobia, body dysmorphic disorder, panic and generalised anxiety disorder.

I have a special interest in depression, emotional reactions to life events and difficulties experienced during the perinatal period.

How I like to work

I work in a collaborative, open and empathic way with my clients. I value the importance of creating a safe and confidential space to talk. I have experience in using CBT, not only for symptom reduction and distress relief, but also to achieve longer lasting changes that genuinely improve everyday life.

I work to empower my clients to get back on track, using their own strengths and resilience. My interventions are always tailored solely to the individual’s current struggles and their personal goals.

The therapy approaches I use

My principal approach is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

Other evidence-based approaches related to CBT inform my therapy, including acceptance and commitment therapy and schema focused therapy.

My credentials and registration

I completed a doctorate in clinical psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London in 2002. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). My registration number is PYL23747.

I went on to gain a post graduate diploma in CBT and I am an accredited cognitive behaviour therapist with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

I have experience in a number of NHS mental health trusts but have spent the majority of my career working for the South London and Maudsley NHS trust based in South East London.
